Bangladesh Genetic Disease Database (BGDD) is the first patient-based genetic disease database in Bangladesh. It is developed and maintained at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad Jakir Hosen. The database is funded by ICTD R&S.

This database keeps track of mutations in the causal genes for that genetic diseases common in Bangladesh. The database will be helpful to physicians, geneticists, researchers, and other professionals in Bangladesh and abroad related to genetic disorders to retrieve and use the information for the benefit of mankind.

It holds patient-based data with respect to geographical location, age, sex, and ethnic group. Disease incidence can be compared with other regions. The mode of inheritance of a particular disease is also recorded. Each disease is represented with gene namechromosome locationmutations, and geospatial distribution.

Objectives of BGDD:

  1. Centralized information repository: To create a comprehensive and centralized source of information on genetic diseases, including details on associated genes, mutations, phenotypes, and inheritance patterns.

  2. Facilitate research: To provide researchers with easy access to curated and up-to-date genetic disease information, helping them investigate the molecular mechanisms, etiology, and epidemiology of these disorders.

  3. Improve diagnosis and treatment: To aid healthcare professionals in diagnosing genetic disorders more accurately and efficiently, as well as inform the development of targeted treatment and management strategies.

  4. Enhance prevention strategies: To help identify at-risk individuals and populations, enabling the implementation of preventive measures and early intervention strategies, such as genetic counseling, prenatal testing, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis.

  5. Promote collaboration: To encourage collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and institutions worldwide by facilitating data sharing and integration with other databases and resources.

  6. Support education and awareness: To serve as a valuable educational resource for students, healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public, raising awareness about genetic diseases and their impact on individuals and communities.

  7. Advance precision medicine: To contribute to the development of precision medicine, where healthcare is tailored to an individual's unique genetic makeup, improving treatment efficacy and minimizing adverse effects.

  8. Inform public health and policy decisions: To provide valuable data to inform public health initiatives, policy decisions, and resource allocation related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of genetic diseases.

  9. Monitor trends and track progress: To track the prevalence and incidence of genetic disorders over time, monitor the impact of interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of research and healthcare initiatives.

  10. Stimulate innovation: To inspire the development of novel therapeutics, gene therapies, and other cutting-edge technologies for the treatment and management of genetic diseases.
